Testimonials from BEBT's rehabilitation clients

October 27, 2011

BEBT runs a physical rehabilitation service called "See Spot Run." It is supervised by Dr. Veronica Busick, CCRT with daily treatments supervised by Amy Gerst, RVT, CCRP.

We have recently been contemplating how to "get the word out" about us so we asked clients for their experiences. The feedback has been overwhelming!

We had a wonderful experience with the rehab program at Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails. Our 3 year old lab needed separate surgeries on both rear knees to repair damage. Dr. Busick made our initial diagnosis and referred us to a surgeon in Cedar Rapids. When we returned for our follow up visit with Dr. Steen he was amazed at the rapid progress she had made, in large part due to the diligence of Amy to guide our fit club sessions to challenge our young dog but restrict her and not allow her to damage her new surgery. Dr. Steen, in Cedar Rapids, didn't even bother giving us his recommendations for rehab as he felt it was unnecessary and recommended we allow Dr. Busick and staff to direct us with rehab. We had a positive experience with the entire program. We chose to include some low level laser treatments to decrease formation of scar tissue. Our soon to be 4 year old lab is very solid in her rear legs today, eagerly begs for daily walks and is looking forward to opening pheasant season on Saturday.

I would also add that Amy is very flexible and accommodating with her schedule to try and make a variety of session times available.

Amy also has a lot of experience with the equipment and how our dog would react to the sensation of being in the underwater treadmill.

We would strongly recommend using BEBT for a rehab program and feel our dog's success is due to the time we spent taking her to rehab.

Two years ago our 4 year old dachshund, Wrigley, had a back injury that is all too common for that breed of dog. Upon being examined by the emergency vet at Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails, we were told we had a short window of opportunity to get him to Ames for evaluation and possible surgery, to try and save the motor function in his hind legs. After surgery and 3 weeks in Ames, it was strongly recommended to us that he continue his rehab, specifically with a certified canine rehab facility with a underwater treadmill.

*Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails offered exactly that*.

After a few months of weekly rehab visits, he had full function back in his hind legs. Looking at him today, you could never tell he had a back injury. And to keep his back as healthy as possible, and a strong core, we continue with regular visits to the Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails rehab facility. We are incredibly satisfied with the staff at Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails rehab, including Dr. Busick and Amy. We could not be happier with the results we see with Wrigley. To this day, he still thoroughly enjoys his visits to the rehab center! (Probably because of the treats he gets!)

Dr. Busick, As an aside to this testimonial, if you have any clients who are unsure about rehab for their dog, or want to talk to someone who has had a dog go thru rehab at your facility, I would be happy to do so.

Regards, Joe

Dr. Busick:

I tried to keep this short enough to actually use, since the attention span of people browsing the web is....uh....what was I saying now...?

Brak says you can use his name, just as long as any pictures include one of those black bars across his face.

Anyway, my effort is below. Feel free to suggest edits. I threw in one sentence just for spite. See if you can guess which one.

The See Spot Run rehab program came along just in time to help with a particularly aggravating problem that had hobbled by eight-year-old border collie Brak for over a year. He had trouble fully extending his rear legs and frequently limped on one leg for a while, and then on the other. He was no longer able to herd sheep, which was particularly hard on such an active breed.

The problem was finally diagnosed as a soft tissue injury to Brak's lower back. He did not require surgery, but because he had been relatively inactive for so long, his muscles had atrophied and his flexibility had eroded. He needed rehab, including stretching, massage, and an underwater treadmill.

The process took many months of weekly visits, but I wanted to be confident I could let Brak herd sheep again. The rehab visits, under the supervision of Dr. Busick and trainer Bekka Borg (who did a fine job, even if she is a lousy Scrabble player) slowly rebuilt the strength and flexibility in Brak's legs and back. He is back to herding and happy at 10 years old!

Hi Veronica & Amy,

Glad to help out! Feel free to edit if needed.

The physical therapy rehab program at BEBT was very beneficial for my 10 year old golden retriever Lexi after surgery for a ruptured cruciate ligament. Having been through PT myself after injuries, I knew how helpful it was for recovery and was confident that it could help pets as well.

The rehab program at BEBT was instrumental in getting Lexi back on her feet in a reasonable amount of time so she could begin enjoying quality of life again, while minimizing her pain. She enjoyed her rehab visits and I was glad to have their caring staff to answer questions and assist me through the recovery process. They detected that she was having muscle spasms and showed me how to do massage and exercises at home to give her comfort. Her visits consisted of underwater treadmill, exercises, massage, laser therapy and TLC.

We are fortunate to have this rehab program in our area and I would highly recommend it.

Dr Busick,

Attached is my testimonial. I know it is long, so feel free to cut as you need. I just wanted to get in all the details to really try to convince people that a lot more of them need to be using this service!

Good luck with your promotion efforts. If there is anything else I can do to help, let me know. Thanks.

Testimonial for See Spot Run Rehab

I would -and do- recommend See Spot Run Rehab at Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails Veterinary Center to a large percentage of pet owners. I found out about this service when Sunny, my senior Brittany spaniel, was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis on all four limbs about 2 years ago. There were really no surgical options for Sunny - it was a matter of managing his pain and mobility to give him a better quality of life for as long as possible.

I was so relieved to learn that we had orthopedic therapy options right here in Iowa City. Previously, Ames was the only place I had known of that had underwater exercise therapy, and it was just not practical to travel so far.

Sunny has been going to see Amy Gerst, RVT, CCRP at See Spot Run, who is now one of his best friends, every few weeks. His therapy involves laser treatment on his arthritic areas, walking through cavaletti poles, working on balance boards and balls, and of course, his favorite, walking in the underwater treadmill. It is not only fun for Sunny (and me), it is a key in reducing his pain and increasing his mobility. By using See Spot Run Rehab, we have been able to keep Sunny on a low dose of pain/anti-inflammatory meds.

Two years ago, I was devastated by Sunny's diagnosis. Now I am grateful that I've been able to help him be a happy, healthy senior dog for a longer time. He is 12-1/2 now and going strong!

After seeing Sunny's success at See Spot Run, we've also taken our other dogs, Shade and Foxy, there for treatment and fun. Shade received laser treatment to heal wounds related to allergies, and we were pleased with the quick promotion of healing after her therapy. Both Shade and Foxy have also gone to "Fit Club," which was just for exercise and fun. They loved it!

I feel anyone with a senior dog should look into the amazing benefits of physical rehabilitation. Also, anyone whose dog has had an orthopedic surgery (ACL, patella, limb breaks or tears) should give your dog the ability to thoroughly heal with post-surgery rehabilitation. (It would be malpractice for a human doctor not to recommend rehab after such a surgery! Dogs need it, too!)

All it takes is an appointment with Dr. Veronica Busick, CCRT, who is amazingly thorough at evaluating individual dogs and coming up with a rehabilitation plan, which includes easy exercises to do at home. Then it’s on to working with Amy in the rehab room. We are so lucky to have this resource and these talented people in our community.
